1. What is Tooth Whitening?
Tooth whitening is also called ‘dental bleaching’. It is the safest, most common and affordable cosmetic procedure on the market today – making people feel more confident and appear years younger. Dental Bleaching is the lightening of the color of the teeth to improve the appearance of a smile using either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide as the whitening agent.
As a child, we had much whiter teeth than today. As one ages teeth darken and discolor: Mineral content and structure of the tooth change and tooth enamel becomes less porous. Tooth enamel also stains over time due to foodstuffs, tobacco, sodas and other pigments that they are exposed to. Unless teeth are discolored internally by use of antibiotics (tetracycline, which causes a brown ribbon staining inside the tooth structure) most teeth are able to whiten to their original state and base color as that of childhood through the use of carbamide peroxide and glycerin solution.
Teeth whitening is the SAFEST COSMETIC PROCEDURE available on the market today. You can feel great about yourself - look fantastic - immediately!
What are my options on this site? Option 1: Instant Trays and Kits Option 2: Custom Fitted Lab Direct Trays Option 3: Gel Refills Option 4: Maintenance
2. What causes Tooth Discoloration?
As children we have bright white teeth because we have a ‘new’ enamel surface free of cracks, stains and trauma. The enamel surface is made of minute crystalline rods, which protect the tooth from daily wear (chewing and food acids and sugars). As we age, the enamel begins to show wear by millions of microscopic cracks and lesions that tend to discolor when filled up with stains from foodstuffs and other lifestyle choices like smoking, red wine and pasta sauces. Over time, enamel naturally starts to wear down becoming more transparent showing the color of the internal structure (dentin) to shine through.
3. Whitening Methods
The two most popular and most successful whitening methods are laser whitening (in a dentists chair) and custom fitted trays (at home). Other options available are: bleaching strips, bleaching pen, and natural bleaching.
Laser/ Dentist or Salon Chair A quick and costly option of teeth whitening performed in a dentist’s chair. A laser is used to speed up the process usually within an hour. Lips and gums are covered leaving only the teeth exposed. Whitening gel (hydrogen peroxide, not carbamide peroxide) is applied to the teeth. The laser light and gel penetrate the tooth to break up the stains in your teeth. The concentrated gel is worn for about one hour. Laser whitening can range between $300 -500 per one hour session.
After having teeth whitened with a laser, your dentist would most likely recommend that you purchase custom fitted trays as they are essential to maintaining the white smile that you have spent so much to achieve (custom whitening trays through a dentist range from $150 -$350)
Custom Fitted Trays for at Home Use.
The most popular whitening procedure recommended by dentists to achieve a permanent white smile is with the use of custom fitted trays. These are handmade trays made either by your dentist (or lab direct available from this site (“Custom Trays/ Complete Whitening Systems) to fit your teeth perfectly holding the whitening gel (carbamide peroxide) close to the surface of your teeth. Learn more about "How custom Fitted Trays are Made" - Lab Direct without a dentist visit available on this site.
How custom fitted trays are made: By making impression of your teeth using an impression tray and putty paste, a mold is poured from these impressions to make “custom trays” that fit to the exact shape of your teeth. (See “How it Works” on our menu bar to learn more about Custom fitted trays).
The major benefit of custom trays is that they keep the whitening gel close to your teeth offering maximum opportunity to whiten and keep the gel away from your gum line, eliminating the possibility of gum irritation. Carbamide peroxide breaks down over a two-hour period so the benefit of keeping the gum close to your teeth is essential. To obtain best results with custom fitted trays for a first time user it is recommended that the user wear their trays with gels for 1-2 hours per days for 7 -10 days consecutively. Guaranteed 7-14 shades whiter! Results are achieved within the first few days. However, to achieve a true whitening results (full cure whitening) it is recommended that the full 7-10 days be completed. Learn more about Custom Fitted Trays in “ How it works”
Pre-filled Trays Temporary one size fits all trays that are preloaded with Carbamide Peroxide solution. They are disposable after each application. They are a more expensive and costly option that custom trays.
Instant Trays (Available on this site)
Also known as boil and bite, warm & form and thermosense, are a one size fits all solution and are not custom made to fit your teeth exactly (benefits of a tray fitting your teeth exactly listed above in custom fitted trays). Instant trays are normally either placed in warm water and then placed over the teeth and through the pressure of your fingertips and tongue are molded to your teeth. They are reusable. Thermosense trays are not place in any water and rather use the heat from your mouth to mold to your teeth. They are also reusable. You can definitely achieve great whitening results but with slightly less comfort and results than custom trays, they also offer no lifetime replacement warranty. Poor fitting trays can irritate the gums and soft tissue because they allow more gel to seep out and may be too big rubbing on the gum line. Instant trays are great for people waiting for their custom trays or for travel. The benefit of instant trays is you can start whitening the day you receive them.
Strips Products like Crest White Strips are sold at most local drug stores and are disposable strips that are placed over your teeth while a very small, mild dose of whitening gel works at whitening your teeth. The feedback received from users is that because they are not custom trays, the strips tend move around the mouth and slip off the teeth as the mouth generates saliva. Saliva is also washing the whitening gel away as there is no ‘tray’ to hold the gel against the teeth. Strips are expensive, cannot be reused.
Paint-on whiteners Products like Colgate Simply White Night and Crest Night Effects is a mild concentration of carbamide peroxide solution (between 5-7% carbamide peroxide), which is painted on the surface of the tooth when retiring and worn overnight. Once again, saliva produced by the mouth is able to wash the gel away from the surface of the teeth. Carbamide peroxide needs at least 30 minutes to two hours to ‘sit’ on the teeth to actively whiten.
Pens Carbamide Peroxide solution in a pen/tube with and a brush on applicator tip attached. By applying a thin layer to the tooth using the brush and holding the mouth open for 60 second allowing the gel to dry the gel works gently to remove surface stains and touch up. Pens are recommended for touch ups or people on the go. Available under “Maintenance” on our site.
Whitening Toothpastes Remove surface (superficial) stains caused by coffee, tea and tobacco but do not penetrate tooth structure. They assist in maintaining whiteness but do not effectively whiten teeth as a first option in whitening teeth for the first time
4. What is Carbamide Peroxide?
The power of hydrogen peroxide to whiten teeth was discovered by doctors and individuals when using hydrogen peroxide to rinse their mouth due to canker sores and other ailments in the mouth. The side effect was that they noticed their teeth were getting whiter at the same time. Carbamide peroxide was developed as a teeth-whitening agent. Carbamide peroxide is an oxidizing agent and a more stable form of hydrogen peroxide, meaning that it breaks down over a slower time period into hydrogen peroxide providing the needed time to whiten teeth. The molecular formula is CH6N2O3, or CH4N2O.H2O2. It is a white crystalline solid that releases oxygen in contact with water. Carbamide peroxide is used to whiten teeth, relieve minor inflammation of gums, oral mucosal surfaces and lips including canker sores and dental irritation and to emulsify and disperse earwax.
Carbamide peroxide is commonly encountered in cosmetic dentistry, where it is used to "bleach" teeth. The active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide, which acts to oxidize inter-prismatic extrinsic staining within tooth enamel. There are several methods of applying the peroxide gel to the tooth ranging from night-guard application at home or in-surgery application. The bleaching obtained is proportional to the length of time the peroxide is applied to the tooth, and the concentration used. The concentration most commonly used for tooth whitening purposes is 15-35%.

5. Carbamide Vs. Hydrogen Peroxide Gel ?
Oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide are used to lighten the shade of the tooth. The oxidizing agent penetrates the porosities in the rod-like crystal structure of enamel and oxidizes inter-prismatic stain deposits. Over a period of time, the dentin layer, lying underneath the enamel, is also bleached.
Hydrogen peroxide is used in a dentist office generally with laser. It is far stronger than carbamide peroxide and can burn gums and soft tissue very easily. It is not recommended for use at home as it can burn the gum and lips. When dentist use it for laser whitening they protect the gums with special gels. Carbamide peroxide is a stable form of hydrogen peroxide and once applied to the trays breaks down into hydrogen peroxide over a 2-hour period. That is why it is recommended that a user wear their trays anywhere from 1 – 2 hours per whitening session. After 2 hours to carbamide peroxide has broken down and is not actively whitening the teeth. Therefore it is not necessary to sleep with whitening trays. 3% hydrogen peroxide is equivalent to about 10% carbamide peroxide. Dentists usually use 9%-12% Hydrogen peroxide in laser whitening which is equal to about 22-35% carbamide peroxide for custom tray whitening. See “Whitening Gels” to purchase.
6. Gel Strength (Percentages) Carbamide peroxide gels sold on this site are available in 3 different strengths 16%, 22% and 35%. The higher the percentage the greater the amount of carbamide peroxide is in the syringe mixed with the glycerin (carrier of the carbamide peroxide) and the quicker the results are achieved. As the percentage of carbamide peroxide increases in the syringe, the gel tends to become more liquid. If you are whitening at home it is recommended that you only purchase carbamide peroxide in the strength of your choice.
16% - gentle action for sensitive teeth, 22% - hi Intensity “professional strength” that we supply most dentists and 35% - quick, extreme whitening of the tooth. 44% - rapid, super white results
8. How long do whitening results last?
The effects of bleaching can last for several months up to a year, but may vary depending on the lifestyle of the individual. Factors that will decrease the effects of the initial whitening include smoking and the ingestion of liquids like coffee, tea, red wine and pasta sauces. Touching up, as needed with the method of your choice will return your teeth to the color achieved though your initial whitening. Once again custom trays are most useful as they last a lifetime and are ready when you need to touch up.
9. Tips for maintaining white smile?
Teeth will naturally start to discolor over time due to different substances that they are exposed to. Sodas, red wine, pasta sauce, smoking are some of the biggest tooth discolorants. . Some people touch up weekly, others monthly or annually. How often to touch up is up to the individual. If you have custom fitted trays, simply place the gel in the trays, place over teeth and whiten any where between one or two whitening sessions and your teeth should return to the initial whiteness initially achieved. Brush and floss your teeth at bedtime and avoid rich colored foods and beverages for at least a week after your initial whitening. Rinse mouth after dark colored foods and drinks. Your teeth are very clean and porous at this time and so tend to absorb stains in the first week. Try drinking coffee and sodas with a straw.

11. Who should not whiten their teeth? Pregnant or lactating women: There have been no conclusive studies as to whether whitening teeth can adversely affect a growing baby. It is recommended you consult your physician if pregnant or lactating.
Children under age 16: Children under the age of 16: No conclusive studies have been performed on children under the age of 16, however the nerve of the tooth is still enlarged at this age and may cause some sensitivity.
Naturally sensitive teeth: Teeth whitening has known to cause TEMPORARY sensitivity of the tooth to hot and cold liquids have known teeth whitening. This is temporary and dissipates once whitening is stopped. Sensitivity is caused due to the peroxide removing water from the tooth surface during whitening. The tooth naturally re-hydrates after whitening as saliva washes over the tooth again.
Allergic to peroxide: This product contains peroxide, which is known to be extremely safe, even when ingested. However if you are allergic to peroxide do not use whitening gels.
Gum disease and cavities: Carbamide peroxide and teeth whitening products to do not repair or heal your teeth in anyway. They may make it more hygienic due to the wonderful cleaning action of peroxide. If you experience any form of gum disease, cavities or exposed roots we recommend that you visit your dentist prior to attempting teeth whitening.
Fillings, crowns and restorations: Peroxide only whitens natural teeth. If you have crowns or fillings and start whitening your teeth you must be aware to only whiten to the color of your crown or restoration. You do not want to whiten your teeth beyond your crown. Most people with crowns choose to whiten their teeth because their teeth where whiter when their crown were originally matched to their teeth. Their natural teeth may have discolored over time, but not the crown, as it is not porous.
12. Crowns and Fillings. Whitening Before or after? Peroxide only whitens natural teeth. Peroxide does not whiten crowns, bondings and veneers. These are man made substances and are not porous and do not respond to peroxide whitening.
If you are having new crowns or fillings made we recommend whitening BEFORE your dentist matches crowns and fillings to your tooth color. Once you have whitened your teeth the dentist will then match your new crown to the color of your new white teeth. If you have existing crowns or fillings and wish start whitening your teeth you must be aware to only whiten your natural teeth to the color of your crown or restoration. You do not want to whiten your teeth beyond your crown as it will then appear darker than your natural teeth. 13. Minor Risks Temporary sensitivity: Whitening your teeth using peroxide, extracts water from the tooth during the whitening session. Once the whiten session has ended saliva re-hydrates the teeth again. This temporary loss of water creates a temporary sensitivity in some users.
Expertwhitening sells a remineralization and desensitizing gel (available under “Maintenance”), this gel replenishes vital minerals and phosphates back into the tooth structure while reducing or eliminating sensitivity. We also recommend Sensodyne or similar toothpastes, available at most drug stores. These toothpastes contain potassium, which help hydrate teeth and reduce sensitivity. We recommend sensitive teeth tooth paste or remineralization and desensitizing gel. Remineralization and desensitizing gel may be worn after the whitening treatment and be used in the same custom trays as you use for whitening, or may be placed in the tray and worn overnight to offer a full restorative remineralization treatment to the tooth. Remineralization gels have also been known to heal small lesions on the surface of the tooth enamel.
Gum sensitivity: Gum and tissue sensitivity is normally caused by bad fitting trays rather than the bleaching agent. However, if whitening trays are overfilled with gel and it squirts out onto your gums when placed over the tooth, too much gel is being used. This wastes the gel and also leaves room for gum irritation. If gel is left to sit on the gums for an extended period, gums and soft tissue can become sensitive. If you do accidentally overfill your trays then simply wipe the excess gel off the gums and no sensitivity or irritation should be present.
Over expectation of whitening color: A person is born with a natural base color to their tooth (either a yellow base, gray base or white base). No matter how much you whiten you will return to your natural base color you were born with. Some people are just born with a bright white base. Teeth whitening is guaranteed to return your teeth to their whitest shade (unless you were exposed to certain antibiotics and water additives as a child). People with a yellow-brown tooth base tend to experience greater results than people with a green-gray base.
